I've been asked this before and I have to say :

Low Manipulation: Not combing, brushing, or extensive styling often ensures that I am not causing breakage or thinning through constant manipulation.
Protective Styling: Buns, braids, weaves and more buns ensure that outside sources/the elements are not damaging my hair.
Moisturizing is a MUST!: Without constantly puttin the moisture back in your hair it will become dry, brittle and break.
Vitamins: They not only keep my body happy but my hair strong and they have definitely helped my hair maintain its thickness as it gets longer. I take Centrum and Futurebiotics Hair Skin and Nails Vitamin's daily. I have also taken Flaxseed Oil, Fish Oil, Biotin, and Omege 3, 6, 9 for my hair. Vitamins really work especially if you're not eating healthy 24/7.
