Hair Inspiration: Wanakee pt. 1

Anyone who has been on the hair boards for awhile needs no introduction to Wanakee! She is the guru that started it all. Wanakee Pugh is a top model from the 80s and 90s that had long luscious hair that many people thought was fake!!! That was until she came out with pamphlets of information about how to grow hair and her own line of products to boot. She is said to have coined the term, "protective styling", and had many women using healthy hair techniques in the 90s, before the World Wide Web began to spread these techniques through hair forums.

Some of you may remember Wanakee from the ads in the back of Essence magazine with her products and techniques for sale. She was the truth! To this day, women begin challenges on the boards in her name, pledging to use her techniques for a time to grow and retain the length of their hair. She is so revered because her techniques and tips WORK!

Wanakee created the products called "Verifen Complex" that many women used with her regimen. She had a shampoo, conditioner, leave-in, hair oil, daily moisturizer, and more. Wanakee did own the company, but she sold it to hairoil.com and so many of the products may not be the same as when she owned the company. I can say that some women today still use the products and see great results today, but I cannot claim that they are the same formulations as when Wanakee owned the company.

Her pamphlets preach of moisturizing, trimming, protective styling, detangling properly and more. Over the years I have used the information from her pamphlet and website as a healthy hair care guide/reminder. The website that sells her products tends to go up and down, so I have taken screen shots and saved them as pdf. files so that I can view them anytime I choose. I will share the pamphlets and files over the next couple of Wanakee posts, but I want to make it clear that the information I am posting comes directly from the hairoil.com website and can be found on the hairoil.com website.

After my setback, she was my inspiration to get back on the wagon, dust myself off, and reach my goals again. Her hair is gorgeous, her techniques are tried and true, and after hearing an interview about her over a year ago, I can say that she seems to be a sweet and kind person.

Here is her pamphlet entitled: Because You Are Serious About Hair
