Its the same premise as regular tea, you use hot water to be sure that the tea is infused with the taste of the herbs. I am not sure how long it will last, but I imagine that I will find out.  I know that kiesha8185 uses it for at least 8 washes and it doesn't go bad. HTH (Hope this helps)!
